If your dog ring lugs have rounded to more than 25% of the lug height, or if they are no longer visibly tapered, they should be replaced. Another indicator your dog rings are probably worn and in need of replacement is the gearbox pops out of gear under heavy braking. Without sufficient taper on the dog ring teeth, unloading the drive force via braking can can cause the gearbox to slide back into neutral.
